How scary is HAUNTED? Our spoiler-free scare assessment
Loud jump scares, darkness, gore, close-up scares: We break down HAUNTED's scares so you can compare them with your own limits before buying.

The short answer: Quite scary, and in a specific way. HAUNTED relies mainly on loud jump scares, darkness, scares right in your face, and gore. Because everything happens in your real room, it feels closer than many purely virtual horror games. It is not hours of psychological dread, though; the story is too short for that at about 25 to 35 minutes.
This guide does not reveal any twists. We describe the types of scares, not the scenes where they occur.
How we assess the intensity
Fear is subjective. So instead of a number on a fear scale, we describe five dimensions that buyers can compare with their own limits:
- Volume: How heavily does the game use sudden sounds?
- Darkness and light: Are there dark passages and light flashes?
- Closeness: Do threats come right up to your face?
- Violence and gore: How graphic are the depictions?
- Atmosphere: What motifs and moods does the game carry?
Our basis is the official content warning, the store listing (PEGI 18, “Extreme Violence”), and the manufacturer’s description.
1. Volume: high
The content warning explicitly mentions sudden loud noises. The game uses spatial audio that comes from real positions in your room: footsteps behind you, knocking in a wall, voices under the floor. Many scares end with a loud bang or scream, often after a stretch of silence. If you are sensitive to sudden noise, you should deliberately set the volume lower.
2. Darkness and light: high
Several sections take place in near-total darkness, sometimes with only a flashlight or muzzle flash as a light source. The warning also mentions light flashes and dimmed light. According to the manufacturer, the game is not suitable for people with epilepsy.
3. Closeness: very high
This is the point that sets HAUNTED apart from many horror movies. Monsters do not just come toward you; they appear right in front of your face. Add strong controller vibrations with every scare, grab, and hit. Because you see your real room, the distance of a screen is missing. Many players react with jerky dodging movements, so a clear play area is part of the setup.
4. Violence and gore: pronounced
PEGI 18 with the “Extreme Violence” note is no accident. There are blood splatters on the walls, severed limbs, and disturbing imagery. The violence is exaggerated in the style of a Halloween horror movie, but it is explicit. If you avoid gore as a rule, take that seriously.
5. Atmosphere: classic Halloween horror
The motifs are familiar: a witch, creepy children’s voices, a possessed doll, ghosts in the walls, a graveyard. The game plays with the feeling of being watched, such as when something moves as soon as you look away. If you find children’s voices especially unpleasant in horror, know that they play a central role.
What softens the scares
Some features make the game more controllable than the list above might suggest:
- Short duration: The story is over in a good half hour.
- No camera movement: The game never moves the camera; you control your own movements.
- Assists: After every death there is “Help”; from the third death in the same chapter, “Skip chapter.”
- Pause menu: Pause, retry, or return to the main menu at any time.
- Hide my room: Replaces your real room with a virtual padded cell. The mode is intended for streams, but it also takes away some of the “this is happening in my home” feeling.
Self-check before buying
Answer these questions honestly:
| Question | If “yes” |
|---|---|
| Do you like watching horror movies with jump scares alone? | Good prerequisite |
| Do you get startled strongly and throw your arms up? | Clear a particularly generous play area |
| Do you have epilepsy, a heart condition, or an anxiety disorder? | According to the manufacturer, do not play |
| Are you pregnant? | According to the manufacturer, do not play |
| Is the person you are buying for under 18? | Do not buy, PEGI 18 |
Who the intensity is right for
A good fit for: adult horror fans who are looking for jump scares and want a short, intense experience, ideally with spectators in the room.
Too much for: people who already look away during horror movies, who avoid gore, or who are sensitive to light flashes and loud noises. And generally for children and teenagers.
Our bottom line
HAUNTED is not gentle horror, and it does not try to be. Its strength, the closeness of the scares in your own room, is also why it feels more intense than a movie. If you know that and want it, you are in the right place. You can also find the full content warning and age rating in the Meta Horizon Store.
Bottom line
HAUNTED is intense horror for adults: loud, close, and physical because it happens in your own room. If you like jump scares, that's exactly what you get; if standard horror movies already push your limits, skip it.
